Turning, Seeing, REVEALING

A “mask” that forces two users to focus on the small details of their environment while also forging a connection between them. This is done by placing one user inside the mask, which is entirely dark. As the second user turns the handle on the outside, it reveals small windows that give a glimpse into the surrounding area. The users can then switch and discuss what they saw, improving their understanding of the space. The mask is placed in an area with a large amount of foot traffic. I chose this placement because I wanted to provide an opportunity to understand and appreciate the spaces you walk through daily. There is also a container that the mask lives in; the mask is broken down similarly to how the space is broken down when inside the mask. This container permanently lives in the chosen space for users to assemble and use anytime. Models and Drawings made in Rhino 7 and Adobe Illustrator, respectively. The “mask” and container were built using standard woodworking tools. The Video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Horned Melon Artifact

Research Studio 1
A structure derived from my intensive research into the horned melon. I stretched fabric over sharpened wood dowels laid out according to a melon whose horns were dipped in ink and subsequently rolled. Extensive material tests led me to choose this fabric because of its qualities when stretched. It allows light to pass through much more at the points of the dowels. I envisioned this as a much larger structure that could live as a large-scale exhibit and provide the feeling of what it might be like inside the melon. The images towards the bottom are maps I created based on three melons and prints I made at the beginning of the project. Maps were made using Rhino 7 and the plugin Grasshopper, and the Artifact was built using standard hand and power tools.

The Horned Melon Archive

Research Studio 1
A mid-project archive of my research into the horned melon. I focused heavily on the form of the melon and compared that form between three separate melons. I made many prints and plaster castings that influenced my process and eventually led to my final artifact. The ephemeral collages in the photo pocket were made to play on the alien-like form that the melon has. The Video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Prototyping Methods
A hacked 3D printer's purpose has been changed in order to push the pins on a pinboard to transfer any 3D model into reality. Parts were modeled in Rhino 7 and printed on an Ender 3 Printer. The code that controlled the printer was built using the Rhino plugin Grasshopper. The Video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Identity In Transit

An interactive touch board that displays migration data between world regions and the personal stories that live within that data. This project was completed in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee, and many interviews with employees and clients of the IRC led us to this design solution. The project aims to reveal the human stories behind migration data, shedding light on refugees' personal journeys and promoting empathy and understanding between otherwise insulated communities. We envisioned the board existing in the SLC International Airport or another high-traffic travel hub. Modeled in Rhino 7 and rendered in Keyshot 12.
